Dorm and Apartment Decor Ideas for Fall!
posted on August 1st, 2018 | in Good Deal

The dog days of summer are coming to a close. These sunny days always fly by, and soon you will be trading your beach bags in for backpacks. Don’t let the astronomical cost of your textbooks force you to skimp on your dorm or apartment. Your living space is pivotal in your school year. It’s where you’ll socialize, study, eat and retreat. The Purple Cow is your one-stop shop for making your space a home – on a budget.

Make Your Space A Home on a Budget

Here are several creative ideas from our stores of items that consider your aesthetic and your bank account. The items pictured are merchandise that you can find at a Purple Cow near you!

Mugs

Mugs can be both practical and pretty. Vintage, delicate, decorative. Display your favorite mugs on open shelving for storage and decor.

If you’re feeling crafty, repurpose your mugs into candles by melting scented wax and adding a wick, or succulent gardens by potting small plants in them.

Both Purple Cow locations have mugs available. Add a cozy element to your home by choosing your favorites from our selection.

Wall Art

Blank wall space can make a room feel cold and uncomfortable. Instead, try shopping for fun paintings or pictures to hang on the walls!

A fun DIY craft is creating your own art using empty picture frames. This would be a good craft to do with a roommate, and it can be something you take with you forever! Head over to our Pinterest page for ideas on making your own wall art!

Tip: If your landlord or housing director doesn’t allow you to put holes in the walls for hanging objects, use other methods such as command strips or sticky tack. This way it doesn’t chip paint or leave a mark on the wall.

Lamps

When it comes to lighting, it’s all about that base. Did you find a lamp at the Purple Cow with a shape and structure you like, but aren’t crazy about the color?

Paint the base of your lamp to transform any stand to match your room. All you need is a base with a shape you love and some paint or spray paint. Then mix and match your new base with a shade you love. You may not even recognize the lamp you started with.

Throw Pillows

Growing up, were you the kid that A) had a massive amount of pillows on your bed and loved it or B) had a massive amount of pillows on your bed and had no idea what they were for?

Group A – We also love pillows – no shame in that! Using throw pillows around your apartment and dorm is a great way to make a place feel like home. Repurposing older pillows is a good way of creating new, comfortable pieces around your place! More on that on our Pinterest page.

Group B – Look, an overload of pillows ensure that you can nap almost anywhere… so who is the real winner here? Check out one of our locations for a great selection of textiles! We promise you’ll come over to the dark (fluffy pillowy) side.

Don’t like the covering on the pillow but is too soft to pass up? Try re-covering it with fabrics you love and that keep you in budget.

Wreaths

First impressions are everything. A door wreath is the first thing someone will see when they approach your place! Try creating one that is festive throughout the seasons (yes – football season is definitely a season). We stock our stores seasonally, so come visit every once in a while to see what items may be available for your next creation.

There are tons of ideas on our Pinterest! Which one will you make first?

Doormats

Creating your own, personalized doormat can be a good way of expressing your new-home-style while on a budget. Buying rugs from a thrift store and repainting them is easy and quick! Check out some fun sayings and ideas on our Pinterest page.

Books

Whether you’re looking to create the atmosphere of an elegant library, an extravagant personal study, or a rustic nook – books provide endless possibilities for decorative creativity. Cut out pages of your favorites and frame them. Purchase books of similar shades and colors to style on shelving. Use books to create wall murals that take up the whole wall for minimal cost.

Check out the selection of books at our Purple Cow locations to meet the needs of your literary creativity.
